Prompton Fire & Rescue Unit

Who We Are

In June of 1958, after receiving fire suppression services from the Seelyville and Honesdale Fire Departments for more than thirty years, the Prompton Borough Council declared interest in obtaining a fire truck to better serve the residents of their bustling community located 4 miles west of Honesdale.  On July 11, 1958, borough council approved the purchase of a 1943 fire pumper from the Civil Defense located at Fort Indiantown Gap in south central Pennsylvania.  All citizens provided the needed manpower to operate the truck until early in 1959 when the Prompton Fire & Rescue Unit was formed.  The newly created fire department set its goals on providing the fire suppression services needed for Prompton Borough and parts of Clinton,Canaan, Cherry Ridge, and Dyberry townships.  Over the years, numerous houses, memories, and properties have been saved thanks to the quick work of Prompton’s volunteer firefighters.

Currently the Prompton Fire & Rescue Unit operates two pieces of apparatus out of one station in the heart of Prompton Borough.  We are the first due fire department in Prompton Borough and parts of Canaan,Clinton, and Cherry RidgeTownships.  Through mutual aid, we respond to emergencies in a large portion of western Wayne County including our first due municipalities and Clinton, Texas, Dyberry, and South Canaan Townships along with Waymart and Bethany Boroughs.  We assist the Waymart Fire Department, Seelyville Fire Company, Browndale Fire Company, and Honesdale Fire Department regularly and other departments as they also assist us in times of need.

What We Do

We are comprised of twenty volunteers dedicated to serving the community.  We respond to an average of 70 calls a year including structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, trees/wires down, landing zones and other emergencies.  Our quick response time of 3-4 minutes after dispatch, allows our fire department to make many rapid, aggressive fire attacks with the 2300 gallons of water carried between our two trucks.  Our Engine's short wheelbase, and four wheel drive capability make it a needed asset during fire attack and water supply operations here in rural Wayne County.

The members of Company 94 take great pride in serving the residents of our response area.  Because of this, they continue to better themselves and the department by attaining national certifications through the National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications, Pennsylvania Department of Health, American Red Cross, and American Heart Association.  Some of Prompton’s bravest hold the following certifications:  Firefighter One, Firefighter Two, Fire Officer One, Fire Officer Two, Fire Instructor One, EMT-B, EMT-P, Vehicle Rescue Technician, HazMat Awareness, HazMat Operations, First Aid/CPR, and First Aid/CPR Instructor.  All interior firefighters have successfully completed the PA State Fire Academy Essentials of Firefighting class and continue to attain their Firefighter One certifications.  Our department is also 100% NIMS compliant. We enjoy a very successful fire prevention program developed by the late Charles Kardel.  Our Annual Open House during fire prevention week involves other fire departments, EMS companies, and citizens.  It continues to be one of the most successful in WayneCounty.

The Prompton Fire & Rescue Unit would like to thank all of the people who continue to help us accomplish our mission:  We, the members of the Prompton Fire & Rescue Unit, dedicate our efforts to provide for the safety and welfare of citizens of Prompton Borough and it’s surrounding communities through preservation of life, property, and the environment.
