Northeast Suicide Prevention Initiative

Who We Are

Our history begins in 2010, when a group of volunteers comprised of survivors and mental health clinicians began meeting to plan the first ever suicide prevention and awareness walk in Lackawanna County named, Share the Journey. The group continued to meet monthly to discuss and plan on suicide prevention and suicide survivor support activities. Unhappy with the lack of partnership from the national organization they were working with, the group decided to form their own organization concentrating on suicide prevention efforts in Northeastern PA. A year later the Northeast Suicide Prevention Initiative (NSPI) was finally a non-profit 501 (c) (3). We continue to be all volunteers meeting monthly to coordinate formal clinical and community suicide prevention trainings and survivor activities. We heartily support and collaborate with other suicide prevention groups in our communities and join with them for community events such as the Survivor Picnic. As a registered charity, NSPI carries the mandate to provide information, resources, and education to promote depression and other mental illnesses as medical illnesses that respond to treatment and to continue up-to-date suicide prevention and survivor support activities.

What We Do

The Northeast Suicide Prevention Initiative's (NSPI) mission is to prevent suicides in our community by advocacy, collaboration, and education. NSPI works with local, state, and national organizations advocating for legislation, policies, and practices that ensure competency skills for citizens who affect suicide prevention. NSPI funds support survivor healing and prevents suicide by decreasing the stigma for mental disorders and by increasing resources for clinician education. NSPI is a committed grassroots organization run entirely by volunteers and survivors who believe suicide can be defeated.
