Who We Are

As a private non-profit health and human services organization, MFHS works to meet the health and nutrition needs of Northeastern Pennsylvania’s women, children and families with information, education, and quality care.

Founded in 1971, MFHS has been preventing disease, promoting wellness, and empowering individuals to realize the promise of better health for over forty years. Today, we oversee and support a network of health and nutrition centers in 16 Pennsylvania counties, serving an over 100,000 women, men and children annually through five core programs:

  • WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Nutrition
  • Reproductive Health
  • Nurse-Family Partnership
  • Cancer Screening
  • Pregnancy Care

Since its inception, MFHS has responded to the community’s changing needs by continually developing and adapting innovative programing that improves the quality of life for women, children and families. MFHS has a proven track record of service delivery, administering and managing various large and small programs in a timely and effective manner.

Often the only available point of access to affordable, preventive care for many of the women, children and families we serve, these programs rely on support from public/private partners as well as individuals like you.

What We Do

Each of the core programs of MFHS addresses specific needs in the community, and allows Pennsylvania’s women and men to provide the very best for their families.

WIC Nutrition – The WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Nutrition Program promotes the health of women, infants and children by providing food and nutrition education to pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers as well as for infants and children up to age five.

Reproductive Health Services – The MFHS Reproductive Health and Family Planning program provides quality, confidential and affordable reproductive preventative health services to women, men and teens who might otherwise have no access to care.

Cancer Screening Programs – The MFHS Cancer Screening Program provides preventative screenings and diagnostic services for breast and cervical cancer. Women primarily between the ages of 40 and 65 with low to moderate incomes without health insurance are eligible. Other ages may also be eligible under certain circumstances.

Nurse-Family Partnership – The Nurse-Family Partnership (NFP) is a voluntary, free program giving first-time moms valuable knowledge and support throughout pregnancy and until their babies reach two years of age. Partnering first-time moms with caring nurse home visitors empowers these mothers to confidently create a better life for their children and themselves.

Breastfeeding Education – Maternal and Family Health Services promotes breastfeeding as the most perfect infant food and encourages new mothers to choose breastfeeding because it is proven to have significant advantages for both mother and baby. The MFHS WIC Nutrition Program offers valuable information and resources for breastfeeding mothers.

Pregnancy Care – Prenatal Care at MFHS Circle of Care, Scranton is an innovative prenatal program that takes a positive, proactive role in ensuring a healthy pregnancy. The comprehensive package of services for pregnant women includes medical, nutrition, and social services that promote healthy birth outcomes.

SafeTeens – SafeTeens is your resource for reliable health information and your direct link to health centers located throughout Pennsylvania. We are a free, confidential connection to teen services. Whether it’s pregnancy, relationship issues, nutrition, drugs & alcohol, or mind & body related, SafeTeens is here to help.
