Day of Caring 2017

Lend your muscle! Nancy Jackson Memorial Day of Caring

Our annual Day of Caring is one great day of giving back!

On Thursday, September 7th you're invited to roll up your sleeves and make a difference by joining hundreds of volunteers throughout Lackawanna and Wayne Counties. Work hands-on to improve lives and create lasting, positive change in our community with United Way’s Nancy Jackson Memorial Day of Caring! This one-day volunteer endeavor has been an annual tradition of caring since 1994 and has grown to be the premiere volunteer effort in our community with the value of completed projects through the years surpassing the $2.5 million mark.

The volunteer projects include landscaping, painting, cleaning, maintenance, beautification, direct client interaction and scores of other critical tasks to benefit the local organizations making a difference in our community everyday.

Pitch in. Give back. Join us.

Who we are

Whether it’s the tiniest child, the teenager at risk, the single parent or a family just struggling to remain a family in the best sense of the word, United Neighborhood Centers of Northeastern Pennsylvania is about helping real people – in the real world.
UNC is a voluntary, non-profit organization dedicated to assessing and meeting the needs of low-income families, youth and senior citizens in Northeast Pennsylvania. We have been providing people with the tools necessary to integrate into the community and attain self-sufficiency since 1923.
THE MISSION: To work together with neighbors to provide services and create opportunities which empower individuals and build strong interdependent communities.

What we do

UNC accomplishes its mission through six programmatic departments (described below) and a Housing/Community Development Corporation.

  • Community Services - provides crisis intervention and housing/homeless programs to individuals in need
  • Childcare - provides before and after-school care to working families through a network of three childcare centers, as well as all-day programming for preschoolers
  •  Youth Programs - covers a broad range of services, from evening drop in programs to arts and leadership training, with the goal of fostering independence in at-risk teens
  • Older Adult Programs - provides programming for older adults at four senior community centers, as well as a nutritious noon-time meal
  • Adult Literacy - provides adult literacy, English as a second language, and citizenship services
  • Community Health –works with low-income populations to provide individualized care coordination services, as well as other prevention programming

Through this diverse programming, UNC uses an innovative wrap-around approach to address the emerging needs of the community it serves, setting it apart from many other social services agencies.
