Day of Caring 2017

Lend your muscle! Nancy Jackson Memorial Day of Caring

Our annual Day of Caring is one great day of giving back!

On Thursday, September 7th you're invited to roll up your sleeves and make a difference by joining hundreds of volunteers throughout Lackawanna and Wayne Counties. Work hands-on to improve lives and create lasting, positive change in our community with United Way’s Nancy Jackson Memorial Day of Caring! This one-day volunteer endeavor has been an annual tradition of caring since 1994 and has grown to be the premiere volunteer effort in our community with the value of completed projects through the years surpassing the $2.5 million mark.

The volunteer projects include landscaping, painting, cleaning, maintenance, beautification, direct client interaction and scores of other critical tasks to benefit the local organizations making a difference in our community everyday.

Pitch in. Give back. Join us.

Who we are

The Wayne County Public Library supports diverse community needs for information, education, inspiration, and entertainment through access to electronic and print resources, programs, and expertise. As the headquarters library for the Wayne Library Alliance, we connect seven libraries through a shared catalog, checkout system, and delivery of physical resources including books, large print materials, recorded books, and DVDs.

What we do

The Wayne County Public Library creates connections--people to resources, to the local community, to the global community, and to others with shared interests. We foster five literacies, including basic literacy, information literacy, civic, financial, and health literacy. For children, we offer toddler, preschool, and afterschool programs. For adults, we offer special programs each month on a range of interests and topics, from local history and current events to travel and gardening. During the academic year we also offer computer tutoring for those who want to learn skills such as how to click a mouse, go to the Internet, create an email account, type a resume or letter, and other skills.

We also provide electronic resources, most of which are available 24/7, when and where you need them. We have a catalog of more than 20,000 eBooks to check out to your device (except plain Kindle). POWER Library is a set of statewide resources, searchable databases of articles, newspapers, and information. Learning Express provides career test practice, computer tutorials on basic Office programs, and GED skills and test practice. Mango Languages offers 35 different languages, basic, intermediate, and advanced, including English as a second language. Online Homework Help is available from 2p.m. to 11 p.m. 7 days a week. Students input their grade and the subject and are connected to a live tutor matched by age and subject.

2nd Floor Painting Project

The baseboard, archways, and windowsills could all use a healthy dose of cleaning and paint. Not sure this project could be completed in a day and it would require areas of the library to be closed off as the team moved through the second floor. It would brighten up the area and make the building a cleaner/ happier place to be.  9:30 am- 3 pm
